Self numbing

There are no addictions, it is society that has given meaning to the word addiction.
An addiction is any kind of self numbing that every person on this earth takes part in, each in his own way. Every form of escape from reality (suppressing painful/ happy feelings) is a form of self numbing; for one person this is abundant eating and for the other it can be an extreme use of the internet, it goes from drinking away problems to compulsive shopping, from any distracting activities to not work on yourself to having compulsive routines like cleaning, nail biting or face painting.
Instead of judging people who are struggling with these problems, it is better to start a process of self-reflection and ask yourself how you are doing self numbing. Don't ignore how the persons around you do self numbing because before you know, you support them in running away from themselves. When the glass is already full, do not add another one. Start talking with the persons around you who can use your support, help and love.
Society has determined in what way it is 'acceptable' to do self numbing, while, in my opinion, any form of escape from yourself that takes over your life is problematic and needs to be worked on.
In the end it all boils down to the fact that everyone in this distant world is looking for meaningful relationships while we make them just unattainable through self numbing.
